Student service learning volunteer tries adobe plaster in the southwest

How We Got Started...

The same way you make adobe...is the same way we got started....a handful of earth and clay and a bit of water and straw...on a sunny day on the old plaza...reconvening for the annual enjarre and surrounded by friends, family, neighbors, relatives, students, uncles, aunties, grandparents, elders, kids, dogs, parents, cousins, volunteers, and even a few unsuspecting tourists...helpers of all ages and walks of life, from near and far...with wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes, buckets, hoses, and trowels...water bottles and straw hats... ready to carry, mix, haul, pat, pour, stir, roll, rub, and smack...some mud...with love...

It doesn't get much better or more real than this...especially when we take a break to stand around in the dust together and eat fresh-cut watermelon...or stroll to the picnic tables out back where the wonderful church ladies have made lunch for everyone...including homemade tamales, New Mexico green chile and red chile, or enchiladas...oh yeah!

Some things in life are precious and timeless...

once you have felt, tasted, smelled, experienced adobe..
.you will know what we mean... and will be happy to help!

THE PROJECT

Our own communities are filled with a wealth of resources, stories, and experience worth finding, sharing, and celebrating.  At the Community Learning Network, we know that, and it is our honor to build stronger communities by supporting "real-life learning in real-life places with real-life people."

The Adobe & Heritage Project was started to share and preserve the community-based wisdom and traditions of our region.

This collaborative effort is intended to:

  • celebrate and honor the culture, history, and heritage of our region

  • support the art and science of adobe-making and building with adobe

  • help preserve, protect, and pass on the wisdom, traditions, and skills of adobe and other traditonal arts of Northern New Mexico for future generations

YOUTH ENGAGEMENT

When youth, or anyone for that matter, have a chance to put their hands in the mud, something magical happens. The age old tranditons of our region, such as adobe-making, can be endearing, engaging, and educational for all ages. However, we also believe these traditions and skills provide a potent sense of place and even pride that can prove a lifeline for our children and future generations.  We are developing a range of opportunties for youth and students to link with area elders and traditional artists to learn, honor, preserve, and promote the cultural and regional arts of Northern New Mexic0. Join us, sponsor a project, fund a scholarship, or donate supplies to support our initiatives including:

  • traditional arts workshops with area families and students

  • service work projects for groups to participate in adobe restoration and building

  • Educational immersion programs for student groups

  • "Love Where We Live" Youth Ambassadors training for youth of Northern New Mexico
